The Challenge of Time Management

The struggle to find time for studies among your daily responsibilities is a common hurdle faced by many. Whether you’re a working professional, a busy parent, or someone with multiple commitments, carving out moments for focused study can seem challenging. The demands of work, family, and social obligations can easily consume our entire day, leaving us feeling drained and overwhelmed.

While it may feel challenging, implementing your study into your busy schedule is indeed possible. Here are some practical tips to help you make the most of your time.

  • Prioritise and Schedule – Assess your daily routine and identify pockets of time that can be dedicated to your Islamic studies. It could be early mornings, lunch breaks, or evenings before bed. Prioritise these time slots and create a consistent schedule that includes dedicated study periods.
  • Utilise Technology – Leverage the power of technology to make your study sessions more easy.  Find mobile apps or online platforms that offer Quran recitation, translations, and tafsir (explanations). This way, you can engage in study even during short bursts of free time.
  • Multitasking Opportunities –  Look for opportunities to combine your study with other activities. For example, you can listen to Quran recitations or lessons while travelling, doing household chores, or exercising. This allows you to make progress in your studies while accomplishing other tasks.

Confronting Language Barriers

The journey of learning Quranic Arabic can be both challenging and deeply rewarding.

As a native English speaker, I personally struggle with grasping the fine points of Arabic, particularly with pronunciation, yet every moment spent in learning has been so enriching.

When I embraced Islam in 2004, understanding the meaning of Al Fatiah became a must. I wanted to understand the meaning and feel a deeper connection with Allah. This led me to learn the word-to-word translation. And so my journey with Students of Quran began.

Here are some practical tips that certainly helped me in my journey.

  • Find a qualified Tajweed teacher who can provide dedicated assistance and clarification on the pronunciation of the rules of Tajweed.
  • Practise regularly to improve your pronunciation.
  • Focus on understanding the word-to-word translation of the Quranic verses to deepen your understanding and connection with the text.
  • Consider enrolling in structured programs such as Alhuda, which offer comprehensive resources and guidance for Quranic studies and language learning.

Overcoming Lack of Family Support

Facing a lack of support from my family due to my conversion to Islam was a challenging experience. Their unfamiliarity with Islam and its teachings created a barrier, leaving me to navigate my Islamic learning without their support.

My experience may resonate with some of you, while others may have different experiences they have had to overcome through the lack of support from their loved ones.

Your journey does not have to be one of isolation. You can take proactive steps to seek help and support.

  • Seek support from mentors, teachers, or members of the community who can give you guidance and encouragement.
  • Build a supportive network by connecting with like minded people who understand your journey.
  • If you are able, communicate openly with family members, addressing any concerns or misunderstandings they may have.
  • Educate your family about Islam and the support you need from them.
