Dua For Students – Understanding Deen

الدِّيْنِ	فِى	فَقِّهْنئِ	اَللّهُمَّ
deen	fi	faqihni	Allahumma
The religion	In	(Grant) Me Understanding	O Allah

Narrated by Ibn 'Abbas

The Messenger of Allah said when Allah wishes good for someone he bestows upon them the understanding of the religion.

(Tirmidhi)  

When we recite this dua in a gathering we change the faqihni to faqihna

فَقِّهْنئِ	فَقِّهْنا
faqihni	faqihna
(Grant) me Understanding	(Grant) us Understanding

Whoever is given an understanding of the deen has also been given the Good News from Allah.    and what is the Good News?

When you have been granted understanding of the deen know that Allah  wants good for you.

Knowledge & Understanding

إِنَّا أَنزَلْنَاهُ قُرْآنًا عَرَبِيًّا لَّعَلَّكُمْ تَعْقِلُونَ

“Indeed, We have sent it down as an Arabic Qur’an that you might understand.”

(Al-Baqara, 2:12)

Students who struggle to learn Word-to-Word English translation of Quran are making a great effort in order that they can understand and comprehend Allah's  words directly, they are striving for that direct understanding and connection.

Many people have knowledge of the Quran but they may not have the understanding of applying it.   We might interpret it differently or understand different so we need Allah's  guidance and tawfeeq along with the Sunnah of the Prophet (saw) to understand His religion.

Understanding & Tawfeeq

وَمَا تَوۡفِيقِىٓ إِلَّا بِٱللَّهِ‌ۚ

and my success (in my task) can only come from Allah

(Quran Hud: 11:88)

To be given knowledge with an understanding of the deen is a great honour.  As Students of Quran, we take courses, attend classes, sacrifice our time and put in a lot of effort to learn.  We don't want to graduate at the end of our studies with just information about the Quran, we want to fully understand the information and be given tawfeeq, the ability and opportunity to apply the information.

توفيق	و ف ق	Tawfeeq - to reconcile, power to do something, direction to a right issue, achievement of aim, ability and opportunity to do something

Ability & Opportunity = Tawfeeq

You may have the opportunity to do something meaningful but you may not have the ability to apply it, or you have been given the ability but not the opportunity.

When opportunity and ability are reconciled you then have the power to move forward and do the task at hand.  This is tawfeeq which only comes from Allah.

Be Grateful for Tawfeeq

Those of you who were blessed with skills and talents before Islam is skilled and talented after Islam too, meaning:

A person who is very talented and successful, when they have Islam everything becomes more, their talents are used more, the good qualities in them come out more.  Islam does not waste peoples personalities, potentials or qualities, it enhances them.  Whatever your skills or talents, Allah  has blessed you, so always be grateful.  Whoever is grateful, Allah  will give them more. 

Your talents, skills along with what you have learned throughout studying can all come together to do good works for the sake of Allah  and gain reward for the Dunya and hereafter.
