The Quest for Perfection

In my journey as a student of the Quran, I’ve often grappled with the notion of perfection. One name of Allah (SWT) that has resonated with me recently is As-Samad.  It signifies that Allah (SWT) alone is Perfect and Complete in every sense.

Struggles and Reflections

There have been countless times I hesitated to share my notes on the Quran with you. My internal struggle was rooted in the desire to present them flawlessly, and to be seen as an impeccable student. However, this pursuit of perceived perfection has only held me back. It dawned on me that while I aimed for perfection, I inadvertently kept valuable lessons learned from those who could benefit from them.

This reflection also extends to my role as a web designer. I often hesitated to present myself, to truly show up as Jamila, unless everything felt perfect. But in doing so, I wasn’t always authentic to who I am.

Embracing Authenticity Over Perfection

Through the study of Allah’s name As-Samad, I’ve realised that only Allah (SWT) is the epitome of perfection. It’s a humbling reminder that we, as humans, are inherently flawed and that’s okay. Our strength lies in our imperfect authenticity, our willingness to learn, and our passion to share, even if it’s not perfect.

Sin, Repentance, and Divine Mercy

We will make mistakes, get things wrong, and even sin. Yet, in this very human act of going astray, there’s a profound wisdom. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) conveyed a beautiful message that gives every believer hope

“By Him in whose hand is my soul, if you did not sin Allah would replace you with people who would sin and they would seek the forgiveness of Allah and He would forgive them.” (Sahih Muslim 2749)

This hadith beautifully reminds us that it’s not our perfection that Allah seeks, but rather our genuine return to Him, our repentance, and our constant striving to be better. Every misstep can be a stepping stone to a closer bond with Allah (SWT) if it leads to sincere repentance. Allah’s mercy is boundless, and He loves those who turn to Him for forgiveness.

As you navigate your journey through life, be gentle with yourself. Understand that while we might never attain perfection, the act of consistently turning back to the Perfect, The Absolute, As-Samad, after our misdeeds, is a journey of immense growth and closeness to Him.

The Profound Meaning of As-Samad

In recognising and internalising the attribute of As-Samad, I invite you to reflect upon the comforting notion that perfection belongs only to Allah (SWT). Let this knowledge guide and ease your pursuits, knowing that it’s your sincerity and effort that counts, not our quest for unattainable perfection.

I remind myself now that my strength lies in authenticity, and a passion to share, even if it’s not perfect.

Delving Deeper into As-Samad

Say, ‘He is Allah, [Who is] One, Allah, the Eternal Refuge (As-Samad). He neither begets nor is born, Nor is there to Him any equivalent.'” (Quran, 112:1-4)

As-Samad – The Eternal Refuge

This name also speaks to the One who we turn to for all our needs and the One we lean on in times of adversity. Every time we feel lost, or in need, it is to As-Samad we direct our prayers, for He is our unwavering support.

As-Samad – The Perfect, The Absolute

As-Samad beautifully captures the essence of perfection that is unique only to Allah. Unlike His creation, He is free from any defects, shortcomings, or needs. In His perfection, He stands as The Absolute, devoid of any imperfections, and untouched by the flaws and frailties that we as human beings experience.

As-Samad – The Unbreakable

Imagine a foundation that’s so solid, that it’s unbreakable and impenetrable. That’s what As-Samad signifies. In a world filled with change and uncertainty, it is comforting to know that we have an anchor in As-Samad, who remains constant.

As-Samad – The Satisfier of All Needs

Lastly, in our journey through life, we all have needs, desires, and hopes. And while we may seek them in various places, it’s only As-Samad who truly satisfies every need of His creatures.

Deepening Our Connection

As you reflect upon this name, let it be a guiding principle in your own journey. Understand that our quest for perfection is, in many ways, a reflection of our inherent desire to connect with As-Samad, The Perfect and The Absolute. But remember, while we strive for excellence, only Allah (SWT) embodies true perfection.

May this understanding of As-Samad deepen your connection with Him and guide you in your daily endeavours.
